The following Saturday Liverpool lost 4:2 to Aston Villa at Villa Park. Torben Piechnick made his Liverpool debut. Mark Walters gave Liverpool the lead just before half time but Dean Saunders - who had left Liverpool just 10 days earlier - equalised almost immediately. Goals from Dalian Atkison, a second from Saunders, and Gary Parker gave Villa a comfortable lead in the second half. Ronny Rosenthal, who had missed an easy chance when the match was scoreless, got a consolation goal near the end. The result left Liverpool in 17th position in the Premier League on 9 points having won just 2 of their opening 9 matches.
