The following Saturday Liverpool drew 2:2 after extra time with Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final at Goodison Park. Bryan Robson gave United the lead in the second half. Ronnie Whelan equalised with just three minutes remaining of normal time. Frank Stapleton restored United's lead in the first period of extra time. With just one minute remaining, Paul Walsh equalised for a second time. The replay took place fours days later at Maine Road. A Paul McGrath own goal gave Liverpool the advantage at half time but second half goals from Bryan Robson and Mark Hughes meant it was United who advanced to the Final and a meeting with Everton.
