The following Saturday Liverpool won 5:1 against Stoke City at Anfield. Kenny Dalglish and Phil Neal gave Liverpool a half time lead. Dalglish scored again early in the second half. Paul Bracewell pulled one back for Stoke but further goals from Craig Johnston and Graeme Souness rounded off the victory for Liverpool. The result left Liverpool in 1st position in the First Division on 66 points after 29 matches; 14 points more than second placed Watford.
