1982 European Interclubs winners medal awarded to Liverpool players and officials. The European Interclubs Team of the Year competition, sponsored by Adidas, was awarded by France Football magazine. The league table was based on marks given by their football correspondents throughout the season. The awards ran from 1968 to 1991.

The following Saturday Liverpool won 1:0 against Sunderland at Anfield. The only goal came from lan Rush in the first half. The result left Liverpool in 4th position in the First Division on 51 points after 28 matches; 5 points behind leaders Swansea City who had played 2 matches more. After being eliminated from Europe, Liverpool did not lose again, winning 12 and drawing 3 of their remaining League matches. They finished the season as First Division League Champions on 87 points; 4 points ahead of Ipswich Town. The Saturday before the CSKA Sofia match, Liverpool had won 3:1 after extra time in the League Cup Final at Wembley against Tottenham Hotspur. The FA Cup run had ended in the 5th round with a 2:0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. In December, Liverpool had lost 3:0 to Brazilian club Flamengo in the European / South American Cup in Tokyo. The European Super Cup Final was not played against Dinamo Tbilisi because the clubs were unable to arrange a suitable date or venue.
