The following Saturday Liverpool drew 1:1 with Arsenal at Anfield. Both goals came in the second half Graeme Souness scoring for Liverpool; Alan Sunderland replying for Arsenal. The result left Liverpool in 3rd position in the First Division on 18 points after 13 matches, 4 points behind leaders Aston Villa who had played a match more.
