The following Saturday Liverpool lost 3:1 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Phil Neal gave Liverpool the lead from the penalty spot early in the second half but a goal from Tommy Langley, and two efforts from Steve Finniston secured the points for Chelsea. The result left Liverpool in 5th position in the First Division on 36 points after 29 matches, 9 points behind leaders Nottingham Forest.
