The following Saturday Liverpool lost 2:1 to Aston Villa at Anfield. The match had a 2:30 PM kick-off time. Andy Gray scored in both halves for Villa, a Frank Carrodus own goal in the second half was Liverpool's only reply. The result - Liverpool's second league defeat in a row - left them in 5th position in the First Division on 18 points after 14 matches, 4 points behind leaders Nottingham Forest.
