The following Saturday Liverpool won 5:3 against Stoke City at Anfield. Terry Conroy gave Stoke the lead. A Phil Neal penalty and a John Toshack goal gave Liverpool a half time advantage. Ray Kennedy increased the lead early in the second half. Ian Moores replied for Stoke but goals from Emlyn Hughes and David Fairclough secured the points for Liverpool. There was still time for Alan Bloor to score a late consolation goal for Stoke. The result left Liverpool in 1st position in the First Division on 56 points after 40 matches; 1 point ahead of Queens Park Rangers.
