The following Saturday Liverpool lost 2:0 to Middlesbrough at Anfield. Both goals came in the first half from Terry Cooper and John Hickton. The result left Liverpool in 2nd position in the First Division on 43 points after 33 matches; 2 points behind leaders Queens Park Rangers who had played a match more.
