On the previous Saturday Liverpool won 5:0 against Sheffield United at Anfield. Goals from Phil Boersma, Alec Lindsay and Steve Heighway gave Liverpool a commanding half time lead. Peter Cormack scored their fourth goal early in the second half. Tommy Smith then missed a penalty (he also had missed from the spot against Carlisle earlier in the week). When Liverpool were awarded another penalty soon after Kevin Keegan stepped up to complete the scoring.

The following Saturday Liverpool won 2:1 against Leeds United at Elland Road. Mick Jones gave Leeds the lead. Larry Lloyd equalised before half time. Phil Boersma scored the winner in the second half. The result left Liverpool in 1st position in the First Division on 16 points after 11 matches; the same number of points as Arsenal who had played a match more.
