Athletic Bilbao were eliminated in the Quarter Finals by Rangers. The 1969 Fairs Cup Final was won by Newcastle United 6:3 on aggregate against Ujpesti Dozsa.

The following Saturday Liverpool won 4:0 against Burnley at Turf Moor. Roger Hunt scored twice in the first half. Goals by Peter Thompson and Geoff Strong in the second half secured an emphatic away win against 16th placed Burnley. The result left Liverpool in 1st position in the First Division after 12 matches on 18 points; the same total as 2nd placed Leeds United, and 3rd placed Arsenal. Leeds had a match in hand. Liverpool finished the season in 2nd place in the First Division on 61 points; 6 points behind champions Leeds United. They were eliminated in the 5th round of the FA Cup by Leicester City 1:0 at Anfield after a 0:0 draw at Filbert Street. In the League Cup, Liverpool lost 2:1 to Arsenal at Highbury in the 4th round.
