The second leg against Celtic was played only five days after the match in Glasgow but it still feels there was a good two weeks between the matches, it must have been the excitement and anticipation. There was more rain on the way to Anfield and a damp mist hung over the stands as the crowd packed in. The official attendance was 54,208 but the Celtic fans were everywhere and the real number must have been nearer 60,000. Capacity was not as strictly adhered to as it is now and gate men did not like turning fans away, especially ones that had come a long way. 2-0 to the Reds with a memorable goal from Geoff Strong, who was limping at the time he scored.
The green and white scarves, the singing and movement in the crowd is evocative of better times, but the sight of the floodlight reflection on bottles is the image that stays with me. In his book, "Paisley", John Keith says that when Shanks and Jock Stein visited Anfield the following day and saw the bottles knocking about the terraces Jock said "Are you going to give us a cut of the takings or should we just take the empties back?"
