The following Saturday Liverpool won 3:2 against Rafa Benitez coached Newcastle United at St. James Park. The match had a 7:45 PM kick-off time. Virgil van Dijk gave Liverpool an early lead. Christian Atsu equalised for the home side soon after. Mohamed Salah restored Liverpool's lead before half time. In the second half, Jose Salomon Rondon equalised again for Newcastle before Salah had to be replaced by Divok Origi after suffering a head injury and it was Origi who scored the winning goal with just four minutes remaining. The result left Liverpool in 1st place in the Premier League table on 94 points after 37 matches, 2 points ahead of Manchester City who had a match in hand.
