Real Madrid won 5 – 3 in a penalty shoot out after the teams tied 1 – 1 after extra time. Real Madrid defeated Juventus 4 – 1 in the 2017 final played at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on June 3rd, 2017. Real Madrid won their third consecutive title beating Liverpool 3 – 1 in the 2018 final played at the NSC Olimpiyskiy Stadium in Kiev on May 26th, 2018.

The Champions League Final was Liverpool's last match of the season. They had finished the Premier League in 4th place on 75 points, 25 points behind champions Manchester City. In the FA Cup, Liverpool lost 3:2 to West Bromwich Albion in the 4th round at Anfield. In the League Cup they lost 2-0 to Leicester City at the Walkers Stadium in the 3rd round.
