The following Sunday Liverpool lost 2:1 to Arsenal at Highbury. The match had a 4:00 PM kick-off time. Thierry Henry gave Arsenal a half time lead. Luis Garcia equalised midway through the second half. Xabi Alonso was sent off after a second yellow card. Henry then scored a late winner for the home side. The result left Liverpool in 3rd position in the Premier League on 55 points after 29 matches; 20 points behind leaders Chelsea. Liverpool finished the season in 3rd position on 82 points; 9 points behind champions Chelsea. They were unbeaten in their final 12 league and FA Cup matches. Liverpool won the FA Cup final 3:1 on penalties against West Ham United after the match has ended 3:3 after extra time at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. The League Cup run had ended in the third round with a 2:1 defeat to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. In August, Liverpool had won the European Super Cup 3:1 after extra time against CSKA Moscow in Monaco. In December, Liverpool had travelled to Japan to participate in the World Club Cup. They were defeated 1:0 in the Final by Sao Paulo of Brazil.
