Liverpool finished the season in 4th position on 60 points; 30 points behind champions Arsenal. In the FA Cup, Liverpool lost a 5th round replay 1:0 to Portsmouth at Fratton Park after a 1:1 draw at Anfield. In the League Cup, Liverpool lost 3:2 to Bolton Wanderers at Anfield in the 4th round. Despite securing Champions League qualification, Gerard Houllier was replaced as manager by Rafael Benitez during the Summer.
