The following Sunday Liverpool won 3:1 against Leeds United at Anfield. The match had a 2:00 PM kick off time. Michael Owen and Danny Murphy scored for Liverpool in the first half. Mark Viduka replied for Leeds. Steven Gerrard wrapped up the points for Liverpool in the second half. The result left Liverpool in 5th position in the Premier League on 52 points after 31 matches; 14 points behind leaders Arsenal. Liverpool finished the season in 5th place on 64 points; 19 points behind champions Manchester United. On the last day of the season, Liverpool travelled to Stamford Bridge needing a win to finish in the Champions League places. In the end, Chelsea won 2:1 to clinch the last place; Steven Gerrard was sent off in the last minute of the match. Liverpool had actually led the league by 7 points at the end of November but they endured an alarming dip in form after being eliminated from the Champions League. The 1:0 win at Southampton in the middle of January was their first win in 12 league matches, a run where they only accumulated 5 points out of a possible 33. The FA Cup run ended in a 4th round replay with a 2:0 defeat to First Division Crystal Palace at Anfield after a 0:0 draw in the first match. The League Cup did bring silverware with a 2:0 win against Manchester United at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. In August, Liverpool had lost the Community Shield 1:0 to Arsenal, also at the Millennium Stadium.
