The following Saturday Liverpool won 1:0 against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. The match had a 5:35 PM kick-off time. The only goal was scored by Michael Owen in the second half. The result left Liverpool in 2nd position in the Premier League on 71 points after 34 matches; 1 point behind leaders Arsenal who had a match in hand. Liverpool finished the season in 2nd position on 80 points; 7 points behind champions Arsenal. Liverpool had a very strong second half to the season, winning 13 and drawing 1 of their 15 matches from the end of January. In the FA Cup, Liverpool lost 1:0 to Arsenal at Highbury in the 4th round. Martin Keown had already been sent off for Arsenal when Dennis Bergkamp, who had scored the Arsenal goal, was sent off for a foul on Jamie Carragher. As the referee ordered the Dutchman off a coin thrown from the crowd struck Carragher, who hurled it back and was himself dismissed for violent conduct. The League Cup had ended in the 3rd round with a 2:1 defeat to First Division Grimsby Town after extra time at Anfield. In August Liverpool had won the Charity Shield 2:1 against Manchester United at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Liverpool had also won the European Super Cup 3:2 against Bayern Munich in Monaco.
