The following Friday Liverpool won 3:2 against Bayern Munich in the European Super Cup at the Stade Louis II in Monaco. Goals from John Arne Riise and Emile Heskey gave Liverpool a 2:0 half time lead. Michael Owen increased the lead just after the break. Bayern came back with goals from Hasan Salihamidzic and Carsten Jancker but Liverpool held out to win the trophy. The European Super Cup was the fifth trophy Liverpool won in 2001.
